We’ve been playing with science with a fantastic group of young carers in Burgess Hill.
Young carers are children and young people who help look after a member of the family who is sick, disabled or has mental health problems, or is misusing drugs or alcohol. They may be someone who has direct caring responsibilities or they may be someone whose life is affected as a result of living with someone who has these conditions.
Each year Burgess Hill Council and Burgess Hill Youth put on a number of events that offer these young carers free time to come together to play sports and games, try arts and craft activities and go out on trips. These events offer young carers valuable space to explore activities in an informal environment away from the home or school.
We’ve been working with them to provide some ‘make-and-take’ science activities. These drop-in activities give the young carers all the kit they need to build something themselves which they then home. The informal atmosphere means that you can have some lovely conversations about the science involved as they make and do.
